1. Israel intensified its bombing of targets on three fronts the day after a humanitarian convoy entered Gaza.
| The Israeli military struck a mosque compound in the West Bank, one of few airstrikes since 2006 in the Palestinian territory. It also continued to bomb Gaza and struck a target in southern Lebanon, where it has clashed with Hezbollah. On Saturday, 20 aid trucks crossed into the strip from Egypt to bring in supplies for the first time since Hamas's Oct. 7 attacks. Humanitarian agencies warned that the aid deliveries fell far short (🔐read for free) of what is needed to sustain Gaza's more than two million residents, about 1.4 million of whom have been displaced from their homes in the current war, according to the U.N. | |

2. At least half a dozen Republican hopefuls are angling for the House speaker job.
| Rep. Tom Emmer (R., Minn.), who serves as the House's majority whip, has announced a run and has already locked up an endorsement from former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Other candidates include Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, Byron Donalds of Florida and Pete Sessions of Texas. Candidates are expected to pitch their colleagues at a forum on Monday evening ahead of an internal vote to designate a new Republican speaker nominee as soon as Tuesday morning. | |

3. Big tech earnings will test the stock market.
| A group of tech stocks known as the Magnificent Seven has powered the S&P 500's 2023 rally. Most of those companies will open their books in the coming days, allowing investors to gauge whether big tech and the broader market have room to run. Microsoft and Alphabet are expected to report on Tuesday, followed by Meta Platforms on Wednesday and Amazon on Thursday. Also in focus this week will be GDP data for the third quarter of 2023. The latest episode of WSJ's Take on the Week podcast looks at what the data will tell us (🎧) about the American economy. | |

4. With prosecutors set to wrap up their case this week, Sam Bankman-Fried faces a crucial choice.
| On trial for fraud, money laundering and other offenses, the founder of collapsed crypto exchange FTX has spent nearly three weeks watching some of his closest former friends and colleagues take the stand and offer what appeared to be damning testimony. With his legal team searching for a way to change the momentum, Bankman-Fried may take perhaps his biggest gamble yet: testifying in his own defense. | |
5. A group of familiar basketball stars are still going strong.
| Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets begin the defense of their championship when the new NBA season starts Tuesday night. Among their likely challengers are the Los Angeles Lakers and 38-year-old star LeBron James, the Golden State Warriors and 35-year-old cornerstone Stephen Curry, and the Phoenix Suns, who in February traded a trove of young players and draft capital for now-35-year-old Kevin Durant. The longevity of the aughts' icons shows there has never been a better time to get old in the NBA. | |
